The prevailing activity they are happy to report is not confined to mercantile men alone, bu» graziers and farmers are meeting with fairly good markets for their cattle and sheep. The late rains and overcast damp weather has been most beneficial, for grass and water are now plentiful'again, sand several owners who would have been-obliged to part with a portion of their: stock on account of scarcity of feed will not sell nows,; Fat stock is still late rates, and stores of all descriptions'find'ready’buyers. Some capital lots of sheep were pepped, and ; |here yyas a good attendance of buyers, so the whole sale went briskly from start, to finish. They, sold 38 shorn crossbred ' ewes and‘wethers'at 10a, 50 shorn fat wethers at Us fid, 34 fat crossbred wethers in the wool at 12s, 52‘at 12s fid, 80 at 13s fid, 74 at 14s, 30 at I4s lOd, 29 at 15s, 109 crossbred hoggets at Ids fid, 250 at 10s Bd, fiO ewes with lambs at 13s, and 173 at 13s 9d, 11 pigs at ss, and 2 at 255, 3 steers and heifers at £5 7s fid, 4 at £5 15s, 4 steers, at £6 ss, 3 af£fi 12s fid, IS at £7, and 2 at £7 7s fid, 15 heders at £2, 3 springers at £4 12s fid, l,at 6s, ,1 milch cow at £4, lat £4105, ; l Horses—for the last two Saturdays some draught horses of a better sta,mp have been entered for salei the bulk of thVdnti-ies, however, still being of the weedy used up sorts, for which owners expect 1 extravagant prices. Of late there has been an improved demand for the better class,> andfor mares in particular for breeding purposes, the export of such a large number [as 1 has been sent to Australia having;had a very appreciable, effect on the market here, and now anything really good seldom passes the actioneer unsold if only a fair price is expected. For , cheap hacks as usual at this time of the year there has been a better sale. They have sold draught mates and geldings at from £l6 to £25, light horses from £9 to £l4, backs from £5 up to £l6. ASHBURTON LIVE STOCK MARKET. Mr E, G. Stareley (for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports on the Ashburton Market of October £?th, as follows : ’ . , 5000 sheep were entered,- antHhere was a moderate entry of cattle. Sheep wore dull of competition, and a large proportion of the entries were withdrawn. Fat shorn crossbred wethers brought lls fid, do mixed, 10s fid, merino ewes in wool with a fair percentage of lambs 6s, 7s 9d, Bs, and 9s lid, crossbred hoggels in wool 8s 7d and 10u| §d, small do 6s lOd to 7s 3d, shorn crossbred* ewes with Jambs ,8s 3d, fair merino wethers'in wool 5s Bd. There was a good demand for cattle, fab cows bringing £5 15s; £6lss arid £7, medium dairy oOws‘£4 10s to £5, small sorts, proportionate values.
