SOCIALISM IN AMERICA.

In some of our great cities (writes a New York correspondent) people are Hying m daily dread of dynamite, the uee of which is openly advocated by the ever-growing Socialist party. At Chicago a plot was discovered to surprise the arsenal, capture the arms of the militia, and begin a great riot, such as took place a few months ago in Cincinnati. Seven hundred or 800 men were imp icated, but their design vfas so cunningly managed that no legal proof can be found to ensure the cottvietion of the ringleaders. A special guard has been kept nightly on the ersenal, and so far there has been no outbreak. At Cleveland there have been a series of destructive incendiary fires—no very surprising thing to those who remember that that city is the scene of the " Bread-winners," and that the novel is a faithful drawing from Jife of the social conditions existing there. The police report, too, that these fires have been caused by a novel agent—a liquid which ignites only many minutes after it has been sprinkled upon irflammtble material. Chemists have been warned to keep watch upon all persons who buy the Decessary ingredients. In Pittsburgh the great factories are under constant guard, and the p. lice are worried nearly to death by false alarms. In the Hocking Valley the striking mine's are arming fcbem selves with breech-loading repeating guns, having been taught by their former battle with the militia that ordinary muskets are useless. In that region during the pa*t six months between 2,000,000 and 3,000,000 dollars' worth of proparty has been deatr >ved by rioters, and the struggle is more bitter than ever. At New York, a week ago, a can of some explosive was plaoed against the wall of a great dry-goods store, but no harm was ; done beyond Bmashi"g 3000 dollars' worth of plate glass, and.filling the face and hands of an unfortunate drunken man, who happened to be near, with splinters. The outrage was certainly committed by eome striking emploje<, but the pelice havfc, in spite of their boasted skill, failed as yet to find th* gni'ty parties. The " Equality Association," to which all the strikers belonged, and from whose funds they have been supported, bas etar'ed the brilliant noti.n that the explosion was the work of a British agent, and intended to scare the American people into greater activity against dynamite!
