The Orient Company's R.M.b. Orient will probably take the New South Wales contingent from Souakiui to Sydney. A strong Committee has been formed to carry out the construction of the Adelaide ocean dock. Ihe necessary funds for the work 'will be provided privately. The Eastern Extension Telegraph Company will connect Normantovn, in Queensland, with the Roper iiiver in the northern terriiory, the Adelaide Government undertaking to connect the latter place with the Elsie Creek on the overland telegraph line. Obituary—Mr Alex. Redfern, of the firm of Redfern and Co., Australian shippers. Sir S. L. Tilley, Minister of Finance, Canada, succeeds Sir Charles Tupper as High Commissioner for Canada. May 15.
Tenders were opened to-day for the Queensland Government loan of £2,500,000 at 4 per cent., the minimum of which was fixed being 97. The total amount tendered for was £3,750,000. Tenders at £97 9s 6d will receire 35 per cent, of the applications, above that amount in full. The official average was £97 19s 4d. New Zealand frozen mutton is realising 5d to per lb. The Hon. Mr Childers, Chancellor of the Exchequer, contends that colonial securities are liable to pay stamp duty.
The limit of the June wool Bales has been reached.
It is reported that the Vatican will submit to England three names in connection with the appointment of an Archbishop for Dublin, and that Bishop Moran's name will be the first submitted.

Parliament hai voted the allowance to Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice.
Referring to the Irish question, Mr Gladstone announced a partial renewal of the Prevention of Crimes Act in Ireland, and stated that Government were at present unable to deal with the question of Irish local self-government, or proceed with the Land Purchase (Ireland) Bill. Captain Penrose, of the Royal Engineers, who was selected for New South Walts, will sail by the P. and O. steamer Parramatta. Lieutenants Millward and Bunbury, selected for the same colony, will sail by the Orient steamer Iberia. May 16.
The Standard this morning announces that the Suez Canal Commission allows Egypt the control of the navigation of the Canal.
A hitch has occurred in the settlement of the Franco-Chinese question. May 17.
The Orient Co.'s R.M.S. Potosi, from Melbourne (left April 3rd), has *rrived at Plymouth with a consignment of frozen mutton on board.

The insurrection fomented by Louis Riel is collapsing, and numbers of the rebels are daily tendering submission to General Middleton. Louis Kiel, the leader of the rebels, has been captured.
