Football. —On Saturday afternoon a match took place between the Ashburton Football Club and the local team at Geraldine. The following were the players :-r: Ashburton—Messrs S. Clark (captain), B. Mcßobie, E, Simpson, D. Williamson, A. Death, 0. Moss, H. Mors, H. Fooks, E. holey, W. Field, G. Kidd, J. Kidd, W. Kidd, and Pass. Geraldine—Messrs Fred. Fish (captain), A. Erskme, C. Harding, J. Brown, C, Foster, E. Millard, G. Bethune, K. Temple, R. Temple, J. Ogilvie, J. Kallaugher, and W. Fleming. The Geraldine Wanderers Club were, on the whole heavier and stronger than the Ashburton Crescents. The Ashburton captain kicked off, and Ogilvie, for Geraldine, securing the ball made a short run, but was soon collared by the Ashburton forwards. A succession of scrimmages, in which the Ashburton team generally secured the advantage, worked the ball in close proximity to the Geraldine goal, but eventually the ball was worked out and secured by Fred. Fish, who made a splendid run from goal to goal. He easily passed the Ashburton backs and kicked an easy goal amid thb applause of his side. Erskine kicked off for Geraldine, and soma time the ball was kept about tbe middle of the ground. Scrimmages were now frequent, and though several attempts were made by G. Bethiine, Temple and Ogilvie, for Geraldine, and Mcßobie, Clark and Death for Ashburton, they were never allowed to get far away with the ball. In the second half hour spell the game was pretty evenly contested until the ball was worked into the Ashburton goal when a maul took place between Erskine (Geraldine) and Clark and another Ashburton back. According to the umpire’s decision the ball was secured by Geraldine, who entrusted Erskine with the try. The attempt, though an excellent one, did not' result in a goal. The umpire’s decision in favor of Geraldine was questioned by several members of tbe Ashburton team, amongst whom Mcßobie was conspicuous for his free criticism. In the end he refused to play any longer, and the team withdrew. The majority, however, wished to play it cut, but Mcßobie who evidently had had enough, retired. The Geraldine team therefore won the match by goal and a try to nothing. It is to be regretted that the match was not played out in a friendly spirit.
