A miner named Thomas Quaelly was smothered on Friday afternoon by a fall of earth in his tribute at the Moanatairi mine, Auckland, George Mcßae, a settler of Mangare, Auckland, who has had three horses destroyed in the recent agrarian outrages in the district, has now, in addition to being boj'cotted, received 9, threatening letter through the Post Office, hinting at his contemplated assassination. A serious accident occurred at Woodville last Friday night. A pair of horses bolted with a brake at the Wood villa end of the Manawatu Gorge. The brake, with five occupants, was thrown over the cliff into the river-bed. Two of the ladies were injured, the rest escaped almost unhurt. Of those injured, the wife of the Rev. J. Worboys is in a critical state from internal injuries, and Mrs Lowey had her foot crushed. At Cambridge on Saturday a man named Bundle sued the Stewards of the Piako Turf Club for the stakes of a race won by bis horse. The defendants pleaded that the money had not been received from subscribers, and judgment was given tor them, plaintiff to pay costs.
The body of a man aged about 45 was picked up in the water at Wellington on Saturday. It is understood that certain charges have been preferred against Dr Levinly, medical superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum, Wellington, and that Dr Johnston, District Coroner, Mr H. S. Wardell, R.M.., and Mr Joseph Mackay, of the College, have been appointed a Commission to enquire into the matter. At the inquest on David Stokes, at Blenheim, the jury found that deceased died from effusion of blood on the brain through a fall from his horse whilst under the influence of drink. They censured the licensee of the Awatere Accommodation, House for supplying deceased with liquor. ■".
