In the House of Commons to-day Mr Chamberlain, President of the Board of Trade, announced that he would not during the present session proceed further with the Merchant Shipping Bill. X.
The Homeward mails via Sair Francisco, dated Auckland, May 27th, were delivered to-day. '

It has transpired that M. Ferry has informed his colleagues that the,Chinese Government have not disavowed the action of its officers in opposing the occupation of Langson by the French troops, but on the contrary, has admitted that it ordered the detention of the town, contending that its evacuation was dependant upon the ratification ol the treaty concluded at Tientsin by Li Hung Chang and Captain Fournier, the French Commissioner.
The Bill introduced by the Government for the revision of the Constitution of France has been finally passed by both Chambers.

The latest accounts to hand from Toulon and Marseilles state that the epidemic of cholera is increasing in those towns. The precautions taken to prevent the spread have been futile. Cairo, July 3.
The report current yesterday that Debbah had fallen into the hands of the rebels is now proved to have been witliout foundation.
