NEWS BY THE MAIL.

While thirteen men were being hauled to the surface at the miaing town of Redrath, Cornwall, the rope attached to the car broke, and the men were precipitated to the bottom of the shaft and instantly killed. A ferryman left Dover on a floating bicycle on 28th July, for the purpose of crossing the Channel, and arrived at Calais at five o'clock the same afternoon.

The Queen received Mr and Mrs Gladstone on the 4th August for the first time for many years. The coldness between the Queen and the Premier is lessening. This is J considered to indicate an early application to Parliament for a farther grant to t'h.s sons of the Prince of Wales.

In the House of Commons on August 16th, during a debate on the Bill for payment of the expenses of, the Commissioners in Ireland. Mr Parnell declared that unless the deficiencies were speedily remedied, he would lead a deeper and more desperate agitation than any witnessed yet. The new and more desperate agitation threatened by Mr Parnell is supposed to refer to a demand for peasant ownership, with or without compensation to land owners. On the 9th August one hundred persons of both sexes petitioned the guardians of the North Dock Union of Dublin to pay their passages to Canada or the United States, as they were unable to get work at Home. The Government have decided to provide an additional £50,000 to aid Irish emigration, the money to be taken from the British Exchequer instead of the Church surplus fund. The ' Ci)who_\ s ' have become so strong in Kansas that they virtually took possession of the town of Hummari on August 20th. Five city marshals resigned within ten clays of their appointment. Forsythe, a marshal, was assaulted in the street by a 'cowboy' named Dick Turner, known as the ' killer ;' but the latter was left mortally wounded, and Turner's gang now threaten to burn the town.

On August 21st, while a patty of cvictors were approaching Renshaw's house. County Down, a volley was fired by the parties inside, and a constable and n policeman were dangerously wounded.

A meeting in favor of State aid to immigration was held at the Mansion House, London, on August 10th, at which Earl Shaftesbury presided. It was proposed to send 10,000 families to Canada next spring. :; . Marwood stands a chance of losing his position as hangman. At Durham on 12th August, he appeared diunk on the scaffold to hang a man named Burton, for the murder of a woman. The rope caught under the man's elbow, and he had to pull him out of the pit and fling him down again. : This shocking bungling was represented to the Home Secretary.

A wrangle occurred in the House of Commons over Prince Alfred's Moscow expenses (L 2000). The House was asked to pay this sum, and did so, aftpr a slightly acrimonious debate. Mr Labouchere made a spirited attack on the proposal, calling attention to the fact that L4OOO had already been paid for the English ambassador's expenses on the-same occasion, and saying *3is Royal Highness ought to defray his own expenses when lie wanted to visit his relations. .

The Alexandria correspondent of the Times, telegraphing cm August 16th, Ba y S : _Tf the British troops should be withdrawn from Egypt, no European family could remain in the country a week after their departure. Egypt, he adds, is incapable of self-government. Judge Jeremiah Blanck, one of the leading jurists of the United States, died at his home in New York from blood poisoning. Judge Black, it will be remembered, defended Christianity against the assaults of the infidel Ingersoll. As a constitutional lawyer, he had no superior in America. Undeterred bv Captain Webb's fate, Capt. J. B. Rhodes, also a noted swimmer, gave notice on August sth that within ninety days he intended to brave the rapids and the whirlpool. The glove match between John L. Sullivan, the American champion, and Herbert A. Slade, the Maori, come off on the 6th August at Madison Square .Garden, New York, and'resulted in Slade being knocked out in the third round. Slade was terribly marked.
