PHŒNIX PARK TRAGEDY.

Capetown, Aug. 4,

O’Donnell, who shot James Carey at Port Elizabeth, has been brought up at the Police Court, and committed for trial at the next Royal Assizes on a charge of murder. Melbourne, Aug. 3. .

In the General Assembly last night, Mr Service stated the Government had been advised that it was impossible to deal legally with the supposed Irish informers. It hod consequently hem decided if their identity was complete, to prevent their lauding hero.

but subsequently confessed as to his own identity, and admitted that the others were and Kavahagh Smith. The captain declared that as Kavanagh was bound to Melbourne he would be landed there. The Argus to-day doubts the wisdom of preventing the landing of the informers, and expresses an opinion that it will probably be regarded . jas._unlri end ly_ towards England, and only tend to gratify the disaffected. Later.

The captain of the steamer Pathan interviewed Mr Service to-day, and protested strongly against the action of the Government in preventing the landing of the Irish informers who are passengers by the Pathan. His efforts were, however, without avail, and he has since refused to supply food or water to the police who are stationed on board the vessel. The Government will come to a final decision in the mat ter on Monday, and meanwhile the In vincibles will be compelled to remain under police supervision on board the steamer.
