EDMONDS’S GLEE CLUB.

Thf final concert of the above club, which was held last Thursday evening in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, was vary well attended, the front seats being full, and the back part fairly well patronised. Mr Edmonds at the close of the concert intimated that this would bo the 1 »»t occasion on which the club would appear, as he intended taking a spell when the engagements he had in hand had been attended to. This is very much to be regretted, as the club has made wonderful progress under the tuition of Mr Edmonds, and was a great acquisition. The glees which they sang last Thursday were really excellent—we have heard nothing to equal them given by amateurs. The performance opened with (ho part song ‘ I met her in the quiet lane,’ in which the members of the club took part, and this was followed by ‘The blacksmith’s son,’ by Mr Rutland, who sang well. Mrs Edmonds sang ‘ Many a time and oft,’and also ‘Attest/a new song, composed by Mr Edmonds. She sang both songs well, especially the latter, which is a very good one. Mr Evans, a gentleman from Christchurch, sang ‘ Once again/ and ‘ The message,’ for which he was applauded, The round ‘Hark to the bugle’s sound,’in which the members of the club took part, was splendidly rendered, the voices blending well together, ns they also did in the glees ‘ Come bounteous May/ 1 Awake iEolian lyre,’ and the part song ‘You stole my love.’ Mrs Rout sang ‘ Beauty sleep,’ in a manner that elicited an encore, to which she responded by singing ‘ My own old harp,’ in that classic way so peculiarly her own. Mr Edmonds sang ‘The scout,’ a splendid new song, also ‘The noble boy of truth/ certainly his best song, and as an encore to the latter ‘ Will o’ the wisp.’ He sang as well as we have ever heard him do, and appeared to be in unusually good form. Mr H. |T. Clinch surpassed himself, and created quite a furore with a new comic song, entitled ‘ I shell never make a gentiernan of you John,’ as an encore to which be gave ‘ 0, Fred, tell them to stop.’ His next new song ‘ Bank holiday/ was even better, and as an encore to that he sang ‘ There’s nothing like pride about me.

i Mr Coltmau sang * The bugler,’ in a good deep buss voice, and created a very favorable, impression. The quartette I ‘ The village chorister,’ was one of the gems of the evening. The music of it is delightfully sprightly. In this Miss McNair’s voice was heard to great advantage. We have never heard her voice ringing out so sweetly before, and we think it is a pity she had not a song to sing. The concert was, from a musical point of view, the best we have heard in Terauka, and a great share of the success was due to the excellent manner in which Miss Fish accompanied the singing on the piano. Too much praise could not be bestowed ou her part of the entertainment, and it was very fortunate for the club that she lent her assistance. The whole proceedings wound up with ‘ God save the Queen.’ A ball was then held at which there were about 35 couples present. Dancing was kept up until a late hour, and a most enjoyable evening was spent.
