[Before J. Beswick, R.M., Dr Fish i Rev. G, Barclay, J.P.’s]

ASSAULT,

Charles Johnson was charged hy William Duncan with having assaulted him on 19th June last.

William Duncan deposed : On IBth June defendant came over my fence , and used bad language towards me. He also pulled off his coat and wanted mo to fight, and afterwards knocked me dotvu. Cross-examined : You were off my land when you struck me. After striking me on the head, you said you did not wish to hart me. Thomas Gunion deposed : I saw Duncan coming along the fence, and Johnson took off his coat and struck Duncan. Jane McDougall deposed : On the 18th June I saw Duncan dodging about very and heard him remark, ‘ I came to stop you from crossing ray land, Johnson.’ Cross-examined : I was in my garden when this took place. In defence, Charles Johnson deposed : I did not go on Duncan’s land. He commenced to offer me abuse, and I pushed him down. The Bench fined Johnson 20s and costs. DISORDERLY BEHAVIOR IN A LICENSED HOUSE. John Griffin and Albert Hoskins were charged by Constable Willoughby with this offence, which occurred in the Bush Inn. Thomas Farrell deposed that the accused were quarrelling and fighting in his hotel, and he informed the police of it. McClelland deposed that he saw Hoskins throw a glass of beer in Griffin’s face. The charge against Griffin was dismiss 'd, and Hoskins was fined 20* and costs, CIVIL CA C EB. C J Foster v. W Gaby—Claim £8 6s.
