The speech v»as characterised by warm expressions of frendliness towards the I akeha, and was more than ever opposed to Te VVhifci. About 150 natives were present at the meeting, and also some Europeans. The natives of the settlement evince friendliness towards the Armed Constabulary by constantlo resenting food. Thf roads at Pungato are being rapidly pushed on, by the efforts of the men sent from Wellington and the Armed Constabulary . The Herald’s Hawera correspondent wires this morning that Mr Parris and the Chief Surveyor started this morning to put surveyors to cut out reserves, for Maoris, on the Wairate Plains. The rercrves are very large, indeed, something like thirty thousand acres, mostly open land, will be reserved. The Government having clearings in the bushes, uot the* slightest opposition to the surveyors is expected. To-day everything has a satisfactory appearance for the occupa-tion-of the plains.
