Hawera
Gift Evening. Two gift evenings were arranged at Hawera for Miss Alison Squire before her marriage. One was arranged by the Methodist young women's Bible class, and the other by the Presbyterian Girls' Auxiliary. Mrs. F. Baker, Mrs. T. J. Hurrell and Mrs. R. Thayer organised the Methodist Bible class evening which was held at Mrs. Baker's residence. Mrs. Thayer, who is Bible class leader, presented Miss Squire with gifts. Items were contributed by Miss Nola; Cross (violin solos), and Miss Margaret Werren (piano solos). Mrs. H. Sargent, president of the girls' auxiliary, was hostess for an evening that followed the monthly meeting. Mrs. M. J. Squire and Miss Squire received floral sprays, and Mrs. Sargent presented the guest of honour with gifts from the assembly and a silver napkin ring as a memento from the auxiliary. Miss Margaret Lamb and Miss Jean Hughson entertained with songs, and Miss Betty Johnson gave pianoforte items. Talk to Women's Institutes. . About 200 members of women's organisations ih South Taranaki heard Mrs. D. Basham speak of her recent travels in America at a social afternoon convened bv the South Taranaki Federation of Women's Institutes held in the Buffalo Memorial Hall at Hawera. Mrs. Basham was welcomed by the mayoress, Mrs. L. H. Clapham, on behalf of residents of Hawera, and by Mrs. A. W. Joyce, federation president, on behalf of women's institutes. Mrs. A. G. Knuckey, group convener, who organised the afternoon's „proceedings, presented both the guest of honour and Mrs. Clapham with floral sprays. Musical items were given by Taiporohenui and Ohangai Maoris, and dances were presented by Lois Bagley. accompanists being Mrs. W. A. Quin and Mrs. K. Cambie.
