Manaia Presentations
A social evening in honour of soldiers on leave, held in the Manaia town hall, was attended by a large gathering. Euchre play resulted: Mrs. P. King 1, Miss Webb 2, Mr. C. Tonga 1. Mr. H. Cate 2. Dance music was played by Mrs. L. Whalen (piano) and Mr. V. Winter (drums). Sunper arrangements were controlled by Mesdames N. Davis, V H. Hobday, L. C. Harrison. E. Vine, W. Bull and J. Rodie. Mr. L. C. Harrison called on the Rev. Mr. Miller to make presentations of a cheque and moneybelt on behalf of the patriotic committee. Mr. W. Bourke, on behalf of the Waimate football club, made presentations to Private A. Borrie. Sergeant Pilot Gulliver and Private W. Adlam. Mr. W. Bourke also made reference to the good record of Captain G. Surgenour, who was recently mentioned in. dispatches. Captain Surgenour was, before enlisting, an outstanding player of the Waimate club and a Taranaki Rugby representative. The men entertained were Sergeant-Major Gorner, Sergeant Pilot Gulliver, Privates Borrie, Adlam, J. Stoddart and J. Hughes.
