Sinking of Famous Ship in Atlantic

Rec. 8.10 p.m. Rugby, March 20. The United States ship City of Flint, which the Germans' had held at Murmansk before the United States entry into the war, but which was subsequently released and returned to the United States, has been torpedoed and sunk in mid-Atlantic, states the United States Navy Department. A survivor who has arrived at Philadelphia said all but 17 of the 65 members of the crew escaped as fire swept the ship, which sank within an hour after two attacks. The- department said 47 other survivors. including all the principal officers, were rescued, but had not yet reached the United States. A special Berlin communique claims that U-boats in the North Atlantic sank 32 merchant ships totalling 204,000 tons and also a destroyer guarding a convoy. The operation developed into a bitter struggle against destroyers, corvettes and aeroplanes lasting several days.
