Germans Try To Suppress Latent Volcano In Europe
Rec. 10.30 p.m. London, March 20. Europe has become a latent volcano, according to Reuter messages from ingide Europe. More than 600 Belgians were arrested when the Germans placed a cordon round several Brussels districts after three senior German officers and two soldiers had been killed. Machineguns were installed at the crossroad*, and searchlights were trained on the crowds, who were forbidden to move. Thousands of people, including German 6oldiers, were searched in the streets. Civilians even had to unfold the turnups of their trousers. The Germans in Czechoslovakia are combating the mounting tension with mass arrests and roundups. They have forbidden flags to be flown and have banned all meetings. Strikes and sabotage are spreading in Denmark's big factories, including Burmeister and Wain's Diesel engme factory, which the Royal Air Force recently raided. There were 17 major stoppages of work in the last few weeks. The Germans are arming the pro-Axis minority in Yugoslavia to enable them to supplement the occupation forces in the event of the Yugoslav population rising. The Polish Government announces that the Gestapo executed all the Jews in the ramaining ghettos in the towns of Radomoski, Ujao,' Sobolew, Radzymin and Szczerzec. Yugoslav officials report that the Germans, in reprisal for sabotage, executed 400 Serbians in the town of Pozarevac and burned down the village of Topaonitza.
