Unique Bowling Feat at Fitzroy In Divisional Pairs
A possible on two successive ends, a feat that is unique in bowling circles at New Plymouth and probably in the Dominion, provided the highlight of play in the northern division pairs championship at Fitzroy on Saturday. In the fourth round R. Karena and H. Stockman, of the Waitara club, and established the commanding lead of 18 to six against E. Dingle and H. Round, of the Fitzroy club. Each pair had previously lost one life, so defeat meant elimination. Round's pair then scored three, and when it held as counters, the possible six on the next end, reducing the margin to three, its stocks rose considerably. To everyone's surprise the pair added the possible on the next end, taking the lead by three, whidh it increased to five on the next end. The Waitara pair reduced the gap by two singles on the last two ends, leaving the Fitzroy pair the winner by three points. It is not unusual for a pair og a four in an apparently hopeless position to retrieve a game, but for a pair to score 17 points on four ends, including two possibles in succession, is thought to consrtitute a record. One possible during * game is uncommon, though not unusual, but not one bowler on the green on Saturday, could reeall an instance whert two possibles had been scored. - In the final game Billing and Cawthray (West End) beat the Fitzroy pair. After being level, nine all, half-way through the game the West End pair drew away to win 21-15, thus becoming entitled to represent the northern division in the Taranaki pairs championship to be play-. ed at New Plymouth on Saturday, probably on the Vogeltown green.
