Pungarehu Gala Assists Red Cross and Hall Funds
The f unds of the Red Cross and the Pungarehu hall will benefit substantially as the result of a successful gala on Saturday. It was arranged jointly by the Pungarehu Hall Society (Mr. H. Gilhooly, president, and Mr. G. W. Watts, secretary) and the Pungarehu branch of the Red Cross Society (Mrs. J. W. Priest, president, and Miss N. Fleming, secretary). The gala broke new ground, marking the first occasion on which girls' marching competitions had been held on the coast, and the spectacular marching of the two New Plymouth teams made a great appeal, as did that of the local novice and school teams. Great amusement. was caused by the antics of the "Home Guard" team comprising six masked local women in groteique arrav caricaturing leaders of tne local Home Guard unit. Their burlesque had to be repeated. The Opunake Federal Band under Mr. J. Humphries, also made its first appearance at Pungarehu, for the marches and also gave numerous selections. The marching competitions judged by Sergeant-Majors McCurdy and Aroa, with Mr. Kirker as marshal, resulted:— Senior, Whites, New Plymouth, 1, Wards, New Plymouth 2; best leader, Miss Noeline Crowe; novice, Pungarehu Red Cross 1 and basketball club cup, Rahotu school team 2; school teams. Pungarehu No. 1 1, Rahotu 2, Pungarehu No. 2 3. The sports programme. including numerous races for school children, was supervised by Father Carmine, Messrs. S. J. Arrnstrong. P. Brophy and S. L. Goodin, Mr. A. Gilhooly starter and handicapper, assisted by Messrs. K. Ngaia and J. Okeroa. The principal events resulted: 100 yards, B. Jarmine 1, R. Fleming 2, T. L. Barrett 3; 220 yards, M. Bro- | pry 1, J. Tamakaha 2; hop, step and jump, | M. Brophy 1, R. Fleming 2; high jump, R. Antill 1. G. W. Watts 2; weight throwing, R. Clegg 1, G. W. Watts 2; nail driving (B. A. Layard, supervisor), B. Brophy; sheep guessing, (G. Harvey), W. Te Whiti, 22olb actual weight. Stalls did good business, those in charge being: Mesdames J. Brophy, W. Kirkwood. Miss K. Fleming (cakes), Mesdames H. Campbell and T. Barrett (produce). Misses E. Gilhooly, L. Real, C. Brophy and K. Kennedy (sweets) , and Red Cross ladies (afternoon tea) and Mr. R. S. Rooks (competitions). More than £67 was taken during the afternoon and Mr. H. Gilhooly thanked all who had assisted, expressins appreciation of the initiative of the basketball club, which had been responsible for the inclusion of the marching. He thanked the marching teams and the Opunake band. The Pungarehu hall was ci-owded for the dance, . £25 18s being taken at the door. Mr. L. Mace was master of cereimonies. Extras were played by Miss ' Queenie Coombs and Mr. Christensen. iMiss Wilma Mowatt was encored for a Jtap dance. Euchre was supervised by 'Messrs. S. L. Goodin and J.
