FINE WORK BY BOYS
ENGINEER'S LATHE MADE WORK AT NEW PLYMOUTH Accurate to a thousandth part of an ir.ch, a 4-inch centre l:.the has been constructed entirely by nine boys in the fifth engineering form at the New Plymouth Boys' High School It was dispatched to Wellington yesterday for display at the centenary exhibition. Those qualified to judge regard the lathe as an outstanding piece of work. Mr. H. H. Skelton, the instructor, told the boys what to do, but took no part ua the actual shaping or construction of the finely adjusted .netal parts. The boys during the past 12 months have done all the turning and fitting and the hardening and tempering of the steel. A micrometer was used to ensure the meticulous accuracy essential wiffi such an implement. The purpose of the lathe is the turning and boring of metal. At the conclusion •:f the exhibition :t will be returned to New Plymouth for use in the school engineering workshop. It is hoped to c-xhibit it in the town before that, however.
