COUPONS FOR PETROL
MANY APPLICATIONS
NEW PLYMOUTH CROWD Coupons were issued to 1224 applicants at New Plymouth yesterday desiring permission to buy 10 gallons of petrol a month for private use. Motor-cycle applications numbered 71. At Stratford more than 400 car owners and 30 motor-cycle owners obtained licenses. New Plymouth applicants were dealt with in a steady stream by a staff of eight men at the Wembley Building distributing office in Currie Street. There was no congestion. Coupons will be issued from the same place until 8 o'clock to-night, but next week the place of issue will be the chief post office. Stratford came to life yesterday with the biggest influx of motor-cars for some time. Either side of Broadway vehicles were parked as thickly as possible during most of the day and the streets were crowded with people. In Broadway and the vicinity more than 330 cars were counted at about one o'clock and the number increased later in the afternoon. The issue of licenses for ten gnlions of petrol for private use does not aflect the licenses already issued for business use and to farmers who live away from town, and can be obtained as extra to the amount previously nllowed to license holders. The licenses issued for private use may be cancelled at any time. but the licenses for petrol for use for business purposes are considered to be of a more or less permanent nature. Should members through illness or other good cause be unable to make personal application for coupons the Automobile Association (Taranaki), upon the relevant information being supplied, has authority to act on their behalf.
