FIELD DAY AT MARCO

GROUP CALF JUDGING SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION EDUCATION AL BENEFITS Members of the Whangamomona district Boys and Girls' Agricultural Clubs held a successful field day at Marco yesterday, the occasion being the annual group judging of calves from the school clubs in the district. A large number of parents and friends were present. Although there were not as many calves on parade as in former years, this was not due to any lack of interest on the part of the children, it was stated, but owing to the fact that dairying was now a less important feature of the district's activities than it was a few years ago. Much dairying country has had to be abandoned. The children and others present were briefly addressed during the day by Mr. R. J. Hollard, president of the South Taranaki Boys and Girls' Clubs, Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., and Mr. J-. D. Law. While Mr. Hollard spoke on the future of farming the other speakers referred to the educational beinefits of club work and to the achievements of the group over the past five or six years. Trophies were presented by Mr. Hollard. The important bearing club work had on the children's future lives was stressed by Mr. Polson. The interests and habits they learned to-day could not but have an influential effect on their futures. The boys and girls' agricultural clubs now filled a very important part in the educational system and would continue to do so. Mr. Law spoke on similar lines, stressing the local application of the aims of the club movement. Praise for the work of the secretary, Miss L. Junker, who had the task of organising the group, was given by Mr. Law. Reference was also. made during "the day to the great imprrrvement that had been made in the school surroundings by Mr. F. Burch, who had incorporated the property in the work -of his dairy farm. The judging was held in a paddock on the west of the school, the sports ground not being available as it was still in process of reconstruction. A welcome was extended to the visitors, and the judg:es were thanked by Mr. R. Kirton (president). He particularly referred to Mrs. A. Klee, who had always interested herself in the work of the various clubs. Mr. Kirton also thanked the women who had helped to judge the handcraft exhibits and the other sections of the display of work . in the schcx>l. Mr. W. Marr was thanked for lending a cow for judging purposes. Judging of the calves was done by Messrs. S. J. Hollard (rearing and cow judging), C. W. N. Rowe (dairy type and Jamb classes) and Rod Syme (chart records). Mrs. Klee's cup for the best calf on both type and rearing in the light breeds was presented to Winnie Wyatt, Kohuratahi, by Mr. Polson, who referred to the help and encouragement given the children by Mrs. Klee. There were 23 entries for the cow judging competition, details of which will be announced later. Officers of the group were: Mr. R. Kirton (president)," Messrs. Hill, McCutcheon, Law, W.
