NUMEROUS SLIPS
EFFECT OF HEAVY RAIN CLIFTON COUNTY WORK Slips and washouts on the roads in the various ridings of the Clifton County, due to the recent heavy rains, resulted in a considerable amount of repair work and in some instances in extra labour being taken on when available, reported the engineer, Mr. N. C. Fookes, at the monthly meeting of the council yesterday. While thc iroads were cleared as expeditiously- as possible, work on the Kaipikari Road formation proceeded slowly as the contractor was considerably troubled with slips on the new work. The reformation and me*alling on Bertiand Road would be completed this week and it was intended to shift the plant to Karaka Road in order to recondition the metalled portion and gravel the surface. In the Waihi riding grading, clearing slips, patching and watertabling were attended to on Turangi, Waiau, Onaero and Mataro Roads. An old wooden culvert collapsed near Northcott's on the Mataro Road and was replaced with aconcrete culvert. Onaero Beach Road had been regraded, widened and culvcrted throughout its length and was now in good conditions. Proposals for re-forming and gravelling 40 chains of Allen- Tikorangi Road were forwarded to the Public Works Department for approval and authority and it was hoped to make a start with this work in about three weeks' time. A considerable1 amount of trouble was experienced with slips in the Urenui riding and the men were chiefly employed on clearing roads and widening narrow places where underslips had occurred. The worst of these was on Okoke Road and necessitated deviating the road through a heavy cutting for approximately four chains. Approval and authority were received for metalling work on Beach Road, Urenui, and it was hoped to be able to start this work in a week or so. Puke Road was repaired and graded. A large wooden culvert on this road collapsed and was replaced with a concrete pipe culvert. Bridge timber" for repairs to the Puke stream bridge and the Tupoki Road bridge were ordered. The May Road track was repaired and improved, but still required a considerable amount of work.
