NO WORK AT MILL
EGMONT BOX COMPANY
SETTLEMENT REACHED
Although no work was done at the Egmont Box Company's mill at Eltham yesterday rumours of a strike in the mill, which would eventually affect worjters in the factory, where about 40 men are employed, were stated to be groundless. Because of a shortage of trained men for certain positions and of logs, nine mill-hands wpre stood down on Tuesday, said a worker at the mill yesterday. H1 feeling and dissatisfaction at the conditions of work were, he alleged, prevalent among the men, who claimed that because of the conditions the necessary labour for key positions could not be obtained, leading to their being stood down. As a result a conference was held yesteiday among the manager, the foreman of the mill, and two representatives of the men. After1 an hour's discussiop an amicable settlement was reached, and the mill will commence operations again this morning.
