OPUNAKE

Mrs. Tyrrcll, Sydney, is visiting Opu-! nake and is staying at the Club Hotel. Mrs. W. A. Sharp, Hawera, is spending a short holiday at Opunake, and is the guest of Mrs. T. N. Watt. Bridge and Mah Jongg. A bridge and mah jongg party was held at the residence of Mrs. C. A. Smith, Main Street, Opunake, to celebrate the birthday of the hostess and also as a house-warming. Mrs. Smith, who was assisted by Miss Alison Smith, wore a frock of tomato red satin, while Miss Smith chose black tulle with a sequin bolero. The highest bridge score went to Mrs. Tyrell, and the prize for mah jongg to Mrs. F. Hammond. Those present included Mesdames J. P. Burton, T. N. Watt, F. Hammond, O. Williams, D. Thomas, D. Mantey, H. Parkes, R. Jenkin, R. Ritchie, P. Dalrymple and Tyrell. Mrs. Clouston Honoured. An enjoyable afternoon tea in honour of Mrs. G. Clouston was held in St. 'Patrick's hall on Wednesday. There was a very large attendance. The Mayoress, Mrs. A. J. Brennan, was hostess and she was assisted by Mesdames W. D. Richards, T. N. Watt, C. Clare, R. Ritchie, F. Hammond, G. Wood, F. Sisley, R. Jenkin, P. Dalrymple and J. O'Sullivan. Competitions resulted as follows: Famous people, Mrs. A. Mathie; travelling parcel, Mrs. R. Hughson; croquet target, Mrs. D. McCrone and Mrs. Thomas tied. In the play off , Mrs. Thomas was the winner. Afternoon tea was served after which Mrs. Brennan conveyed to Mrs. Clouston the good wishes of her many friends on her husband's retirement from public office, expressing pleasure that Mr. and Mrs- Clouston had decided to make their permanent home at Opunake. Mrs. Brennan then presented to Mrs. Clouston a bouquet, the gift of Mrs. R. J. Morris. Mrs. J. Morris, daughter of Mrs. Clouston. on behalf bf her mother thanked those present for their good wishes. On behalf of an anonymous friend, Mrs. Brennan presented to Mrs. Clouston two Doulton cup, saucer and plate sets. A short musical programme was given, the following taking part: Master Maurice Clare, songs, accompanied by Miss B. McSherry; Mrs. J. O'Sullivan, songs; community singing, led by Mrs. L. _ Des Forges with Mrs. Hickman at the piano. Mrs. Brennan introduced Mrs. Shields to those present, and expressed the wish that she would flnd her stay at Opunake happy and prosperous. To receive the guests, Mrs. Brennan wore a smart model ensemble of navy blue relieved with clover pink. A navy hat with clover and navy cire bows was also worn. Mrs. Clouston chose a smart Horal frock in shades of navy and red, with navy coat, hat and accessories.
