Wellington, Sept. 2£.. A notice published in this evening'si Gazette intimates that action has been.: taken by Order-in-Council to maintain the present duties in respect of nails andj white lead in oil for a further . year, ,that is until October 31, 1939. When the tariff was revised in 1934 provision was made for the abolition of the duty under the British preferential tariff on these articles after October 31, 1936. In view of trade discussions then pending with the United Kingdom steps were taken in July, 1936, to extend the duties until October 31, 1937, and a , .further extension of one year, that is, I until October 31, 1938, was arranged in •- October, 1937, after ihe retum of the Minister of Customs, the Hon. W. Nash, from abroad, negotiations with the United Kingdom not having been completed. The Hon. Mark Fagan, acting for Mr. Nash, stated to-day that these negotiations were not yet finalised and the extension now provided for had been ar- * ranged in order that the question of duties on such goods might be considered at a time when the tariff on United Kingdom goods is upder raview. 1
