POWERS OF INSPECTORS SOUTH ISLAND APPROVAL
Christchurch, Last Night. A suggestion to grant powers of arrest to traffic inspectors provided they were properly trained was approved by the South Island Motor Union at a conference to-day. Commenting on the North Island union's objection to power being given inspectors to arrest intoxicated drivers, a delegate pointed oUt that the Government had only to make the inspectors special constables to give them those powers. An inspector had the power to forbid a motorist to drive, and could remove a car to the police station. Mr. Grayson said the N.I.M.U, had no sympathy with the drunken motorist but waated to preserve the liberty of the motoring • public. A sober driver might be in danger of accusation by an unqualified inspector, as hapepned at Auckland.
