DAMAGE TO ROADS

HIGH SPEED LORRIES COUNCILLORS' OPINIONS The high speeds at which many heavy lorries were travelling over shingle roads were criticised at yesterday' meeting of the Stratford County Council. Considerable damage was being done, said Cr. L. Stanford, for metal was being continually thrown off the road. Many lorries had been observed travelling at speeds up to 40 and 50 miles an hour. Surprise that heavy lorries could travel at such rates was expressed by several councillors, but Cr. T. R. Anderson, chairman, said he had followed lorries travelling as fast as 50 and 55 miles an hour. It was generally agreed that lorries should be restricted to the speeds set out in the traffic regulations according to the size of the lorry.
