CAPE EGMONT TRIALS
R. TRIMBLE WINS CUP LOCAL EVENTS DECIDED EXCELLENT WORK SEEN Though there were large entries in each of the two remaining events, the Cape Egmont dog trials were concluded early in the afternoon yesterday. Fifteen competed in the local maiden short head, pull and drive, and as anticipated the work was c 2 a high standard, the majority of the competitors completing their work in good style. The local competitors who had shown up prominently in the two opening heading events fille/. the leadmg places, T. Barrett's Fair winning with two points short of the possible, only half a point ahead of J. Halpin's Poi. R. Trimble, Bai-rett Road, was third a point further back. The judge, Mr. P. Forrester, was impressed with the work of the local competitors who, he said, had improved out of all knowledge since he had seen them compeH at the first trials. That showed the v lue of the formation of the club, as it had encouraged local competitors to take greater interest in the working of their dogs. The cattle driving event, which is the only event c its nature in Taranaki dog trial clubs, attracted 20 entries. The weaner heifers lent by Messrs. W. A. Corbett and R. J. Fleming were very difficult to handle, the dogs being unable i" m'st cases to ch: their tendency to break back in the drive. Only two competitors completed the course, R. Vanner winning with Fay, giving good work in tht head, pull and drives, but nct being able to hold the cattle in the rinw. R. Trimble's Tweed, which had performed consistently well throughout, was the only one to gain full poin'l for holding in the ring, and he gained second place. Points Cup Winner. The consistency ci Trimble's Tweed gained for him Len Nicholls' Motors Cup for the local dog securing most points duririg the trials. Tweed scored 170 points. T. Barrett's Fan was runnerup with 161. Then followed R. Vanner's Fay 156 J and E. Morris' Mac 144. The Pokai Shield for aggregate points in classes I and II was won by L. M. McGregor's Wee Donala, the rumier-up, R. O. White's (Maxwell) Rock, taking tb i_ '.g1eish Cup. In the long head T. Barrett's Fan won the Neville Cup for the open maiden as well as the Trimble Cup for the local maiden, while J. Halpin's (Opunake) Poi won the Ngaia Cup for the open novice event. In the short head R. Trimble took the Green Cup for the open maiden and G. Pokai took the Bennett Cup for the novice. Though the weather was dull and threatening there was again a good attendancc. The committee was congratulated by visiting competitors on the arrangements for the comfort of visitors. T Barrett's Fan won the McNeill trophy awarded to the winner, also the C. Moss Cup for the local man between Warea and Rahotu. J. Halpin's Poi took the Roberts medal for novice. Class V.— Cattle driving event, local; short head, pull, drive through two sets of hurdles set on zig-zag course, and hold at ring. took the Dodge Cup awarded to the winner and tlir W. W. Thomson trophy awarded to the competitor residing bet- een Warea and Rahotu. The sheep guessing competition on the first day was won by P. Savage, who estimated the correct weight, 1011b. The winner on the second day was F. McLelland (Okato), 1021b., the correct weight being 10111b. The chain stepping was won by A. Gilhooly, who stepped the correct distance. Stock Club Ball. There was a large gathering at the Pungarehu hall on Thursday night, when the annual ball was held. Music was provided by Vinsen's Ambassadors Dance Band, extras being played by Misses E. Gilhooly and K. Goodin. Messrs. R. Pickett and J. Clark were masters of ceremonies. The trophies so far decided were presented by Mr. H. Gilhooly, president of the club, the remainde. being presented after the conclusion of the trials yesterday. Mr. Gilhooly congratulated the competitors on the splendid work done during the trials It was very pleasing to note how the standard was improving from year to year, he said. Particularly was this noticeable among the local competitors, whose work showed thc interest they were taking in the training of their dogs. He thanked competitors. and the judge, Mr. P. Forrester. Mr. Gilhooly also spoke appreciatively of the work of the ladies in connection with the catering, a feature that made the trials more enjoyable. The work of the secretary, Mr. G. W. Watt, was also eulogised. The president thanked Mr. H. J. Kelly for placing his property and sheep at the disposal of the club, also Messrs. Corbett and Fleming for lending the cattle.. 1 1
