RECORD EQUALLED
14 OVERSEAS VESSELS BUSY MONTH AT THE PORT If the Myrtlebank arrives to schedule on November 29 the number of ships visiting New Plymouth this month will equal the record for a month. The present record was made in March, 1936, when 14 ships visited the port, eight of them being tramp steamers. Ships to arrive so far this month have been H.M.S. Leander and H.M.S. Wellington, the Karamea, Ruahine and Port Chalmers to load produce and the Tymeric and Tongariro which discharged phosphates and slag respectively. Further arrivals will be the Waipawa, Hauraki and Port Hunter to load and the Naumburg to discharge asphalt, the Salamaua with a cargo of sulphur and the Port Fremantle with slag. There has been a normal arrival of coastal vessels and at least one intercolonial veSsel is scheduled for this month. Consequently considerably more work than usual was avafiable for waterside workers. Up till March of last year there had never been more than nine overseas callers at New Plymouth in a month. 'Nine was the number on several occasions, the last being in February, 1933, December, 1936, and January and April of this year, all had nine overseas vessels. This week-end in particular, the port will be busy, for the Waipawa will arrive late to -night to load and the Salamauai is due late to-night or early tomorrow to discharge sulphur. Two coastal vessels arg due, one to-day and one to-morrow.
