TRIP TO FRANZ JOSEF

TALK TO ALPINE CLUB A lecture on a visit to the Franz Josef glacier was given by Mr. D. C. Ryan to the Mount Egmont Alpine Club at its meeting on Thursday night. A trip had been made by a large party of alpine club members five years ago to the glacier which had in 1862 been surveyed and named by Sir Julius von Haast, after the then Emperor of Austria, said Mr. Ryan. The journey was deScribed, also a climb made in record time to Graham's Saddle from the Almer Hut. "It was really a wonderland; the river of ice moving between the mountain side covered in semi-tropical forest with hot springs flowing lower down and a magnificent ski-ing field of pure snow nine square miles in extent further up. These attractions, although only 300 to 400 miles away, are not realised by many New Zealanders. I hope it may be possible for another trip to be made there by the club." A vote of thanks was moved by Mr. G. McGlashan.
