GROWING OF TOBACCO

NELSON MUSEUM EXHIBIT CASE AT NEW PLYMOUTH The preparation of tobacco for the market, from the sowing to the completed article, is the subject of a travelling museum exhibit from Nelson that has arrived at the New Plymouth museum. The travelling exhibit is part of an exchange arrangement between eight museums, the controlling authority being the New Zealand Museum Association and the funds being provided by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Different stages of planting and preparation of tobacco for the market, illustrations and samples of the leaf at various stages of drying and of the pests that damage the plant are included in the Nelson exhibit. Two test tubes, about 6 inches long by half an inch in diameter, each contain. suflicient seed for the planting of 20 acres. Both the kiln and sun-dried leaves are shown with tubes of different grades of the manufactured article. Under the Carnegie Institute plan each centre distributes a case that remains at the recipient museum for two months. The case at present at New Plymouth was assembled at Nelson and will remain on view for two months before being forwarded to the next museum. Of tlie first series the only exhibit yet to come to New Plymouth is that from Auckland. After this has arrived the assembly of, a second series from each town will take place.
