KEEPING FIT.
A BREATHING EXERCISE. Tliis exercise is for developing your chest. A deep breath fills the luugs and increases the size of tlie chest. It also loosens any tight muscles and so makes ordinary breathing more easy. Besides, all games players and athletes. especially swimmers, need to be able to breathe well. It gives them endurance and they do not get tired so soon. For this exercise stand erect. Slowly raise Ihe arms forward and then upward over tlie 'head, taking in a deep breath ■ until you cannot get any more air into your lungs. Then slowly lower the arms, breathing out until you have forced out all the air you can from your chest. Repeat half a dozen times every morning. The best time is just after any other exercises you have been doing. • Practice of this exercise will give you a strong and supple bacL. Stand with feet astride and arms raised above the
head. Bend a little backward, then, with knees quite straight, swing down and let the arms go right past the' legs oh. the outside. The fingers brushing the floor as they pass. Don't stop, but immediately return, again letting ihe fingers sweep ' the floor. Tlie swing of the arms will help to bring .the body upright again. Repeat the movement 20 times. It is a splendid exercise. Imagine you are chopping wood and put a swing into it. It will loosen up the muscles of the back and legs, and you will soon feel the diiference. You should be able to catch hold of your ankles and pull your head on to you knees. If you cannot do it riow, see how much improved you are after a fortnight of the exercise.
