Sympathy with Mr. J. R. Cruickshank, New Plymouth, in his illness was expressed by the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce last night. Mr. Keith Ward, New Plymouth, who arrived at Auckland on his return from England on Tuesday, is expected to reach New Plymouth at the week-end. Mr. G. McNamara, Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department, who represented New Zealand at the Imperial Cable Conference in London, is a passenger in the Mataroa, which is due to arrive at Auckland next Thursday. , Mr. E. J. Howard, M.P. for Christchurch South and Chairman of Committees of the House of Representatives, and Mr. F. W. Sc.hramm, M.P. for Auckland East, are passengers by the Otrapto, which left London on July 17 and is due. at Fremantle on August 17. Mr. J. Fairbrother, New Plymouth, has been awarded the Auckland brick manufacturers' scholarship this year. This scholarship is given for the best design in brick by students at the school of architecture at Auckland University College. Union Airways passengers to and from New Plymouth yesterday were: To Wellington, Mr. C. E. Yates, Mr. Stevenson, Mr. J. T. Gabites, Mr. N. Liardet; from Wellington, Mr. H. Miller; from Auckland, Mr. C. Gomer, Miss M. A. Archibald, Miss M. H. Bray, Miss E. Young. The Iion. J. A. Hanan, M.L.C., Chancellor of the University of New Zealand, wlio has been visiting Britain and Europe, is returning to the Dominion by way of Canada. After having conferred with university representatives in Montieal, Ottawa and Vancouver, he joined the Niagara for Auckland, where he is oue on August 23. s The Rev. F. Copeland, New Plymouth, will leave to-day for Hastings and Napier for a presidential visit to the Methodist churches in these centres. In exchange the Rev. R. B. Gosnell, Hastings, and formerly of Waitara and Fitzroy, will visit New Plymouth, where he will be the guest of the Rev. V, Mead at Fitzroy.
