RUNNING OF NOCTURNUS

NATIONAL INTENTIONS 1 , i , I nn. i — lt has been definitely decided that F. Baker will ride Nocturnus in the Grand National Steeplechase, states tlie Christchurch Press. The Kight Raid gelding looked very bright at Riccarton oft Monday and palpably benefited from his race on Saturday. There was a general inclination to blame Baker for being unfavourably placed nearing home in the Homeby Steeplechase, and leaving his challenge too late, but the gelding's trainer, A. S. Ellis, shoulders all blame for the position, as Baker was instructed to endeavoui- to keep his mount from or near the front until the straight was reached. This Baker carried out, but tlie plans were laid evidently without taking Cock o' the North into consideration. No doubt Baker would gain useful information about his mount, and Ellis stated on Monday that lie would be allowed to ride his own race in tlie Grand National Steeplechase.
