RUGBY TEAM'S VISIT
.# CANTERBURY AT STRATFORD. TARANAKI MATCH TQ-MORROW. The Canterbury Rugby team to play Taranaki at Stratford to-xnorrow arrived at Stratford by last night's Wellington express. The team, which is accompanied by the manager, Mr. . D. I, Macdonald, and the selector, Mr. W. J. Whitham, will remain at Stratford until Monday morning. H. SMilliken, who generally plays loek, is the only member of tlie touring party to have 'been selected from the ' final trials to play for New Zealand in.the test match against the Springbok team. J. O. HatterSley, the captain, and C. Williams also played . in the final trial games. Both are young imen. Williams, aged .21 years, is a member of the Canterbury University team which is at present leading with Old Boys in the Canterbury senior competition. The match with Taranaki to-morrow will be the third of the Canterbury team's tour in which ihe team has had fairly decisive wins, beating Wanganui 12-3 and Wairarapa by 13 points to 8. The team has suffered only one defeat this year when West Coast showed the upper hand after a forward battle on a muddy field, West Coast winning by 21 points to 14. "We hope to avenge. the defeat by Taranaki at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, in 1935 when we lost 21-8," remarked (Mr. Macdonald to a Daily News representative last night. There were several players in the Canterbury team who had recollections of the thrilling finish when playing Taranaki for the Ranfurly Shield in a match at Christchurch in 1903, both teams scOring 15 points. The team comprises the following 19 players: G. T. Nolan, 'R. Chinnery, J. C. Pawson (vice-captain), J. D. Carmichael, K. S. Mortlodk, D. P. White, L. Brown, C. Williams, F. J. Fo'ley, H. Milliken, W. Coll, D. Whillans, N. J. McPhail, 'R. Burke, J. O. Hattersley (captain), J. B. Eathorne, R. Garrett, W. Fleming and C. Pableclieque. A programme of entertainment for the visiting team during its Stay at Stratford has been arrangedi 'by a Stratford committee comprising the Hon. R. Masters and Mr. F. J. Nolan, Stratford representatives on the Taranaki Rugby. Union, Messrs. J. M. Stephens and W. Bird OUnited Old Boys' club) and C. Massey, W. R. Rae and F. E. Clarke (Stratford club). This morning the players will practise at Victoria Park or the Stratford club gymnasium and at 1 p.m. will be taken by private cars for a tour of New Plymouth and North Taranaki. To-mor-row morning will be free and in the evening the visitors will be the guests of the union at the wrestling bout between Floyd Marsh'all and Joe Kopach Woods. A visit to East Egmont has been arranged for Sunday aftemoon when the visitors will again be transported by private car and on Monday morning the team will leave for the south by the express at 9.30 a.m. The curtain-raiser for to-morrow's match will be the Taranaki first juhior championship. semi-final 'between ■ Stratford, central division winner, and New Plymouth Old Boys, northern champion.
