Rej j. 8.35 p.m. Chicago, Aug. 4. Ih broad claylight to-day a gang daringly kidnapped Donald Horst, two and a-half year old son of a wealthy song publisher and hotel owner. A man accompanied by a woman entered the yard of tlie Horst home where the boy was playing a few fect from his mother. They snatched up the child and ran towards a car in whicli a confederate was waiting. Mrs. Horst screamed and sprang at the kidnapper, who, aided by the woman, beat her to the ground. A Negro maid tlien ran to the scene but was also -knocked down. Mrs. Horst staggered to her feet only to be knocked down again and the car drove off. The kidnappers later telephoned a demand for £1000. The owner of the car used by the kidnappers was traced, He said he lent the car to Fred Ewert who was chauffeur for Dr. Jolin Rose, the physician who attended Mrs. Horst at the time of the child's birth. Ewert and his wife are missing from their home. The detectives are confronted by puzzling features. Mrs. Horst said that the woman kidnapper screamed out as the car drove off: "This is my baby, not yours." While the police were at the Horsts' home the telephone rang and a man's voice said: "The right father and mother have got the baby now."
