SEA FISHERIES
INVESTIGATION BY COMMITTEE. NEW PLYMOUTH EVIDENCE TAKEN. The sea fisheries investigation committee appointed by the Government held its New Plymouth sitting yesterday. The committee comprises Mr. J. Thorn, M.P. for the Thames (chairman), Mr. W. M. Young, assistant chief inspector of fisheries, and Mr. E. Sheed, of the Department of Industries and Commerce. Because of. ebgagements in his constituency Mr. Thorn was unable to visit New Plymouth and Mr. W. M. Young was acting- chairman. Evidence was tendered by a large number of professional fishermen and fish retailers,. and by Mr. R. Day, chief inspector of the New Plymouth Borough Council. The fishermen's evidence covered prices, market fluctuations, freezer accommodation, Sunday trading, wharf facilities, the provision of a slipway, leading lights at Kawhia and Waitara harbours, and a number of other matters. The retailers dealt with such matters as wholesale and retail prices. costs, transport, refrigeration, fluctuation of supplies, whitebait and crayfish supplies and conservation. Mr. Day gave evidence on the wastage of egg-bearing crayfish, spoilage of fish and transport problems. 1 The committee will leave for Wanganui this morning, thence proceeding to Palmerston- North and Wellington, where the final sitting will be held. The eommittee's inquiries have been verv ,'exhaustive, starting at the Bluff on March 17. Three months were soent in the South Island, visits being made to Stewart Island and all the principal fishing ports in the South Island. The North Island inquiry has lasted nearly two months, starting at Napier on June 15, visits having since been made to Gisborne, Whakatane, Tauranga, Thames, Auckland, Whangaroa, Russell, Kaitara, Helensville and New Plymouth.
