On left, the aviatrix tending her machine just before leaving on the ill-fated flight to Howland Island. Mrs. Putnam's Lockheed Electra is shown in the other picture as it was being housed in one of the New Guinea Airways hangars at Lae, where engineers serviced it before the long hop to Howland Island.
