UNEMPLOYMENT FUND. FRAUD. ".'H MAXIMUM PUNISHMENT IMPOSED.
Wellington, Last Night. /V : ■ Describing. frauds on ffie unemployment fund at the present time as noth-, ing less than "a racket, a viCious rac- • ket," Mr. J. H. Luxford, S-M., sentenced Laiu-ence Petersen, labourer, to six months' hard labour on two charges of 1; obtaining £1 by false pretences and convicted and dicsharged him on two other charfees. ; - This is the maximum punishment, the magistrate having the power- to make the terms of imprisonment of three months cumulative on two charges only. ; ; It is understood that this is the first ' occasion in New Zeaiand on which a / / penalty of this nature has been imposed. • Mr. Luxford expressed the hope , that the department would employ the provisions of the Crlininal Code in the future. '
