EMPIRE SOCIAL HELD KAPONGA METHODIST GATHERING. Over 250 members of Bible class and Church' organisations from . Stratford to Patea were present at an "Empire. social" held at the town hall, Kaponga, on Tuesday evening. The social was arranged by the Kaponga Methodist Bible class, the supper arrangements being in the hands of the Ladies' Guild. The Grand March prece.ding the , evenings games was led by Mr. John Harding as "John Bull" and -Miss L. Andrews as"Britannia." Many of the guests also appeared in national costume. Messrs. Gordon Bain and John Harding were masters of ceremonies. The following miisical programme was given: Baritone solo, Mr. A. Daie; humorous song, Roy Hbrkness; Scottish dances, Miss Wilma Marr and Miss Ella Guy; sailor's hornpipe, Miss Wimla Marr; items by the Kaponga Mouth-organ Band and numbers by a sextette comprising Eltham and Patea artists; pianist, Mr. Alan Reynolds. During the evening a presentation was made to the secretary, Miss L. Andrews who is leaving the district. The Rev. Harkness referred to the loss the Kaponga Bible class would suffer by her departure. The fortnightly meeting of the South Taranki Referees' Association was attended by 20 members. Mr. M. Bailey presided. At the conclusion of the ordinary business of the meeting a lecture on the oif-side rule . was given by Mr. S. T. Hunt. Members of the Kaponga Rugby Football Club were present by invitation and on their behalf Mr. C. ' P. Crowley expressed appreciation of Mr. Hunt's talk. Mr. L. A. Wells, on behalf of the Kaponga members of the association, also spoke. Mr. C H. Leabourn, who has been attached to the telephone exchange staff at the Kaponga post office, has received notice of his transfer and promotion to clerk at the Stratford post" office. Mr. Leabourn expects to depart shortly.
