WORK IN COUNTY

QUESTION OF AMALGAMAHON. STRATFORD COUNCIL MEETING. The wash-out on York Road had been repaired, reported the engineer (Mr. J. W. Spence) at the monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council yesterday. The srnall bridge on the Makari Road near the Huiroa railway station had been renewed, ,it was stated. Slips on Mangaehu South and Puniwhakau roads had been cleared. The bridge near Kiore on the Mangaoapa Road had been re-erected in Australian hardwook with tha- exception of the decking and handrails. Forwarding particulars of the meeting of county council representatives at Eltham called to protest against the Local Government Amalgamation Schemes Bill the association drew attention to the meeting's decision that every council should call a meeting or meetings of ratepayers on the subject. Crs. generally favoured the suggestion of holding one central meeting rather than a number of meetings in the ridings. It was decided to call one general meeting at Stratford. The Stratford Borough Council asked the council for a donation towards the tree planting scheme which was being carried out as a permanent. memorial of the Coronation, the planting to be done in Broadway north and south. Mr. P. Thomson was negotiating with regard to planting suitable trees, advised the clerk, Mr. C. Campbell, who explained that it was proposed to use the profits from other Coronation celebrations to pay part of the cost of the planting. The borough council was providing material to the value of £30 but there was not sufficient money to do all the planting. "I doubt whether we should pay anything towards the scheme as all the planting is to be done in the borough, remarked Cr. Skitropp. The council decided to give £5. There were present Crs. T. R. Anderson (chairman), H. C. Taylor, J. C. Best, C. Skitropp, 3. Hutchen, G. Jensen, L. Stanford, W. Vickers,- S. Pitt and W. H. Were. The chairman and Crs. H. C. Taylor, S. Pitt and W. H. Were were re-appoint-ed a finance committee.
