WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Motonui: At the monthly meeting Mrs. McKay presided over a good attendance. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. Greenward and family. It was decided to have a bring and buy stall at the May meeting. Mesdames Jonas and Cole were the winners of amusing competitions. The hostesses were Mrs. Jonas and Miss Megan McKay. Upper Mangorei: The institute cele- . brated the fourth birthday with a party in the hall, the walis of which were decorated with the institute colours, rose and green. There was a big attendance. Most of the evening was spent in dancing, Mr. H. Waite supplying the music. All joined in the singing of "Comrades and Friends" with Miss Pearce at the piano. Mrs. G. Roberts welcomed representatives from Hurworth. and Frankley institutes, and ; thanked all for the co-operation and .help during the preceding year. Mr. H. West and Miss P. West sang to accompaniments by Mrs. L. Kruse. Two playettes, "A Question of Ownership" and : ^'The Advertisement," were given by the •.Misses E. Knauf, G. and B. Pearce, H. johnston, L. Roberts, E. Christmas, I. Gleye and ,W. Jackson. Winners of nov'elty dances were Miss L. Roberts and Mr. G. Roberts, Mrs. Paton and Mrs. Johnston* The Misses G. Pearce and W. Jackson were masters of ceremonies. Eltham: A demonstration on hairwaving was given by Miss Gwen Ware on Wednesday, a vote of thanks being accorded her. Competitions resulted: Calendulas, Miss J. Peters 1, Mrs. A. E. Stephens 2, Mrs. L. Klenner 3; spray of . wood pulp flowers, Miss Stewart 1, Mrs. H. > Sanderson 2, Mrs.- H. H. Marchant 3. A bring and buy stall, conducted by .. Mesdames R. Darling and A. Craig, was well patronised. The recent federation meelting decided to assist the cancer .fund. Mrs. M. Hillmer will be commencing classes for brasswork in connection with the arts and crafts circle. Mrs. R. B. Foord presided. The hostesses were Mesdames H. J. Andrews, O. Corbett, W. Smith and G. Mitchell.
