PERSONAL NEWS AND NOTES. \ . WRITER'S PRIVATE C.I.D. CHIEF. Hugo Adolf Bernatzik was born in 1897, the son of a distinguished jurist of Vienna University. After service in the War in which he was wounded, he began to study medicine. Later he began travelr ling, chiefly after game, and gradually became more interested in the pursuit cf birds and animals with the camera. His wanderings in distant lands on these ventures in time led to a greater interest in the natives of the countries he visited, and his travel bookis reflect that interest. His latest book is titled "Gari Gari." Just recently ' Mr. Ernest Brown, the Minister of Labour in England, has had to move to a larger house to accomodate his library of 11,000 volumes. In the last few years Mr. Brown's collectio'f, of books of all kinds— from fiction to advanced works cf theology — increased at such a rate in his former flat, at regular intervals, carpenters had to be called in to erect new shelves. Mr. Brown has one of the most valuable collections of books of any member of Parliament. AS a writer -on crime, Peter Cheyney occupies the unique position of being tlie only journalist and author in this country with his own crime investigation department. This department is under the direction of ex-Detective Inspector Harold Brust, late of the Special Branch, Scotland Yard. It investigates crime both in England and on the Continent. Mr. Cheyney, indeed. knows the underworlds cf France and Belgium especially well, and also has first-hand knowledge of American racketeers. Originally intended for the law, Peter Cheyney ran away a», tbe age of sixteen to take up a stage career. A year later the War' broke out and he joined up. Having been severely wounded in the second Battle of the Somme, he received a staff appointment in 1917. He is a crac^i pistol shot and' holds an international fencing license.
