Social Disappointment.
The Earl of Warwick, now in Hollywood, is proving a sad disappointment to socially-minded hostesses. He has attended only one party given in h;s honour. His agent arranged that one for business reasons. Night club, theatre and dinner parties have been secretly planned for him - by stars of the film colony, but he has evaded them all. "Fact is," he explains, "I'd rathpr sleep." Lord Warwick, who will act under the name of Michael Brooke, has felt tired ever since he arrived, and blames it on the climate, but some of his friends wonder if his distaste for night life has as much to do with his fatigue as is suggested. They remember that the earl played golf on virtually every course between Beverly Hills and the Pacific Ocean. # * * Joe E. Brown's next starring feature Is "Flirting With Fate." # * * * Leopold Stokowski, famous conductor, has signed a contract to appear with his orchestra in "The Big Broadcast of 1938." * * * * John Cromwell has been set by David O. Selznick to direct Ronald Colman in "The Prisoner of Zenda." • A * * Paul Hoeffler, producer of "Africa Speaks," has completed "Voice of India," the first all-talking picture of India. # # # # Gilbert Roland is to play a featured role in "Midnight Taxi." Brian Donlevy, Francis Drake and Alan Dinehart are also in the cast. * * * .,45, Nino Martini, singing star of The Gay Desperado," has been set by Jesse Lasky to play in "Song of India," based on a song by Rimsky-Korsakov. Eleven hundred head of buffalo, the largest herd in the United States, appear in Cecil B. De Mille's production for Paramount, "The Plainsman," starring Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur. The herd is on the National Buffalo Range at Moise, Idaho. « * # # Fred MacMurray, now working in Paramount's "Swing High, Swing Low," claims he is building his new Beverley Hills home around a gas stove which was once presented to him by the employees of a stove company for whom he once worked. * . % * » Amorig the unusual designs created for Miss Morley is a street dress of role coloured bolivia with natural persian lam b trimming and a cape and muff to match. The trimming extended down the front of the dress is in a Russian effect. The other distinctive creations to be introduced by the blonde player are: An afternoOn frOck of purple and silver metallic cloth_ with frill collar fastened by a diamond and sapphire antique gold clip; a twO-piece travelling suit of blue and red checkered wool, worn with a military cape to match. . « # « • Hollywood's largest cookbook, containing more than 5,000 recipes contributed by admiring fans, is owned by • Edward Amold. Explaining this rather unique method of expressing admiration for himself, the stout star opines that once people glimpse his expansive foredeck they automatically know that the 'way to his heart is the old stomach route. Arnold has just finished work on his latest picture, Paramount's "John Meade's Woman," an exciting drama that has to do with the drought siluation in America.
