TARANAKI NEGLECTED

NATIONAL TOURIST POLICY. HAWERA CHAMBER'S CRITICISM. Dissatisfaction with the treatment of Taranaki by Government tourist authorities was expressed at the meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce and it was decided to seek the co-operation of the Taranaki Chamber in making representations to the department. The question was raised when the president. Mr. E. K. Oemeron, reported that a Westland party making a tour of the North Island under the management of the Farmers' Union would not be visiting South Taranaki, although' two days would be spent; at Wanganui. The Tourist Department's One idea was to get people to the Chateau Tongariro and Franz Josef Glacier.. said Mr. J. E. Campbell. "Chateau Tongariro should be at Dawson Falls, where 'it would be self-sup-porting instead -of costing the country £6000 a year,"- said Mr. Cameron. It was emphasised, that whereas formerly New .Plymouth- had been at ,a dead-end, tlie Stratford-Mairi Trunk route now'did away with any excuse of that sort. • ■
