URENUI FARMERS' UNION. • L. SUCCESSES IN COMPETTTIONS.
A credit balance of £27 9s Sd, the largest since the incsption of the brahch, was shown in the balance-sheet presented at the arniual meeting of the Urenui branch of the Farmers' Uriion last night. Mr. R. G. Luxton presided, 6nd there was an attendalice 6f 22 members. A decrease of teftlm&hb^ii the tesult of resignations br departures',.from the district, was revealed by the annual report. In view oi the sefiohs problems confronting tlie farming commurtity memhers would fully appfeciate hoW irnperative it was that the numerical Strength of the branch as well as of the Union should be built up. The competitions continued to have a kcen following, and by the successes achieved the branch had 'held its own against Other branthes. Mr. A. , Sfriith snr. won the champion sWede ef op coittpetitioh ,which carried with it the Cooper Cup for the champion root. crop in NOrth Taranaki. The ensilage championship cup was won by the president, Mr. R. J. Luxton. Mr. V. Evans won the NOrth Taranaki pasture champiohship and the runner-up, Mr. S. Topless, was also a member of the branch. Mr. E. J. Zimmerman, another member, Was also among the final eight. . The ttumber of entries was 88, compared with 84 for the previous year. The value of the competitions from dh instructional point of view could not be over-emphasised. The annual dance continued to be a financial SUCcess, the result entirely of efforts of the Women's Division. The branch was represented by two teams at the annual shoot. The brahch extended thanks to Mr. A. G. ElliOtt, and the provincial secretary, Mr. D. Le C. Morgan. The co-operation of the branch was sought by the Waitara branch of the New Zealand Labour Party in making representations for a full iqvestigatioh and survey of the coastal route from Mimi to Tongaporutu with the object of haVing the main highway constructed along the coast instead of along' the prpsent inland.- route. Messrs. S. Topless and W. J. Freeth were appointed to accompany a deputation from the Labour Party which is to wait on the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce concerning the matter. Methods to be adopted by branches in connection with the Farmers' Uiiion membership campaign were outlined by Mr. Morgan, who stressed the fact that the Farmers' Union was recognised by the Government as the official representative body of the farming community. As the result of whai other branches had done he thought the response would be far in excess of earlier expectations. At the suggestion of Mr. W. J. Freeth It was decided to ascertain whether part of the West Coast (S.I.) touring party could visit Urenui. It was decided to deVote £3 3s toWards the fund for the establishment of a rest room at Urenui. The following offlcers were elected:— President, Mr. S. Topless; vice-presidents, senior, Mr. C. Wilsoh; juniors, Messrs. M. Johas, P. Elliott, D. Taite; joint secretaries, Messrs. R. Topless and A. Phillips; auditor, Mr. W. Fuller; executive, Messrs. M. Jonas, V. Evans. J. Johnson, j. Mooney, V. H. Sharp, A. C. Smith, D. Tate, C. Honeyfield, B. Mabin, J. Guthrie; delegates to the provincial conference, Messrs. S. Toples: and S. Managh; delegates to North taranaki executive, Messrs. S. Topless and S. Maftagh.
