GAIETIES POPULAR
"IN SUNNY HAWAII" PRESENTED. BRIpHT VAUDEVILLE SHOW. Partiality for good vaudeville was again demonstrated by th? New Plymoutli public, a packed Opera House greeting the second presentation of Stanley McKay's Gaieties "In Sunny. Hawau last niglit. As with the previous programme, "In Sunny Hawaii" proved a highly entertaining production, with its humour, dancing, snappy musical numbers, thrilling specialty acts, and spectacular settings. As was to be expected, a special feature was the Hawaiian fantasy, depicting village scenes, with the natives in their natural surroundings, and culminating in sPccj" tacular sacrificial war-dance to Pete, princess of the volcano. This scene was particularly well done, an accompanying Hawaiian song by Harry Hemming proving very popular. The principal and most popular player was, of course, the Australian comedian Joe Lawman. His patter was good, his stage personality excellent, and he had the art of always "putting it over" well.' He proved most popular with the crowd,; which welcomed him on every appear-; ance. Supporting him excellently right through was a truly "Personality Girl," Miss Stella Lamond, her musical mono-; logues and different numbers proving her most accomplished. Mr. George Corelli played an excellent foil for the comedians, and Miss Elvy Ferguson showed as a gifted violinist. The Hilo Duo won well-earned popularity with their piano, piano-accordeon, saxophone and guitar items, and had the usually sedate and restrained New Plymouth audience singing such numbers as "The Beautiful Lady in Blue" and "Treasure Island." The Martellettis and the Warren Eros, thrilled the audience with truly amazing acrobatic feats. Elton Black (Scottish comedian), . Heather Wright (contortionist and tap dancer) and Cy Pier (ukelele expert) all contributed to make "In Sunny Hawaii" a great success. There will be two further presentations of the Gaieties— to-morrow afternoon at 3.15 p.m., and to-morrow night at 8 p.m., when the company will play "A Brighter 1937."
