DRIVE FOR UNANIMITY

By Telegraph—Press Association.

LYTTELTON TUNNEL ROAD LOCAL BODIES AT CHRISTCHURCH. CONFERENCE FAVOURS SCHEME. QUESTION OF GOVERNMENT HELP.

Christchurch, Lasi JNignu Support for the proposed tunnel road between Christchurch and Lyttelton was given by 23 of 28 local bodies, boards and associations represented at a conference to-day. Thc conference was the climax of efforts by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce since the suggestion of thc Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, that if the chamber obtained a demonstration of unanimity on the proposal the Government was prepared to carry it through. Mr. J. Wood, engineer in chief to the Public Works Department, who presided, said the impression that the Government was prepared to pay the whole of the cost of the tunnel road was mistaken, being based on a misunderstanding of the remarks by the Prime Minister. Mr. Wood's statement provoked questions about the actual extent of the support which the Government would give the project. These Mr. Wood said he could not answer. He quoted the acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, as having suggested that the Government might find half the cost. However, he added, it was a matter for the Cabinet.
