Rec. 9.10 p.m. Toronto, April 8. A general strike was called by the 3700 employees of General Motors today. The walk-out occurred after the sudden breakdown of negotiations between local unions and company officials. Mr. Mitchell Hepburn, the Premier, issued a wamiilg immediately that Ontario would not tolerate the "chaos near anarchy" that Mr. J. L. Lewis, the Labour leader, liad caused in the United Stateo. "This is the first open attempt of Mr. Lewis and the Committee of Industrial Organisation to dominate and dictate to Canadian industry," he said. "We believe the' time for a showdown is at the start. There will be no illegal sit-down strikes or picketing, and persons who desire to resume worki will be adequately protected. Tlie entire resources of the province will be utilised if the occasion warrants it."
