SUMMER GOLF PLAY
TOURNAMENT AT NEW PLYMOUTH. CHONG MAKES BEST GROSS SCORE The New Plymouth Golf Club’s summer tournament opened at Ngamotu yesterday in fine weather with a light westerly wind. Forty-one competitors faced the starter, including players from Auckland, Napier, Wellington and Blenheim. The field was divided into three groups, the first composed of’ players with handicaps of scratch to 11, the second from 12 to 17j and the third 17 and more. The best card in the morning was that of the New Plymouth player, G. M. Chong. He played fine golf to reach the turn in 36, slumped on the next four holes, but rallied to return a 78. His card read: Out, 444543453—36; in, 654644445 —42. J. R. Hobb, the Napier player, failed to strike form, taking 43 for the outward journey. He recorded good figures coming home until a disastrous seven at the 17th ruined his chances. The day’s competition was over 36 holes of medal play with trophies for the winners and runners-up in each group and a prize for the best gross score. The fixture will be continued to-mor-row, when there will be four-ball play in both the morning and afternoon. The following were the best scores:—
