CABINET MEETS BOARD
dairy policy discussed DELEGATE TO LONDON APPROVED. SELECTION OF MR. C. P. AGAR. NEED FOR IMPROVED MARKETING. \ (By Telegraph—Special Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. The interview between the Cabinet and the New Zealand Dairy Board last week appears to have been satisfactory in every way. It is stated on good authority that the principal matter discussed —the despatch of a member of the board to London—met with’ the warm approval of the Ministers. It is understood the board has chosen the deputy-chairman, Mr. C. P. Agar, as its delegate. He will discuss final arrangements of the proposed group marketing scheme with the Tooley Street merchants, whose goodwill, it is recognised by the board, will make a great difference to the smooth working of the new plan. Mr. Agar will also be the board’s negotiator with regard to a new shipping contract, and another important duty will be to keep in touch with the Minister who goes to London to negotiate new trade agreements with Great Britain when the Ottawa agreements are terminated. Members of Cabinet, it is stated, were of the opinion that the board was justified in seeking to improve marketing arrangements, both local and oversea, and informed the board that the Government recognised it as the executive cf a great industry with which the Ministry would be only too glad to co-oper-ate. So far as could be gathered there was no discussion by Ministers or by members of the board with regard to the “guaranteed prices” policy or the bonus to dairy farmers promised by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. L. Martin, last week. The discussion with the Cabinet has, it is understood, enabled the board to further its marketing plans, and it is hoped to have some of the proposed regulations ready for submission to the Government early in the New Year. There is considerable speculation with regard to the future of the Executive Commission of Agriculture, but 30 far there has been no announcement of the Government’s attitude towards the Commission.
